Very
recently I have had a renewed interest in porn. This has happened for a number
of reasons. I am more comfortable with my own sexuality and so, I can sit down
and watch a porn film from the couch rather than on the floor mere inches from
the TV set. I can put the remote aside without having an ever present finger on
the volume, in fear that anyone from the mailman to the neighbors might come a
knocking and discover that I watch porn. I also have an open-minded boyfriend
who will watch it with me, without insinuating that I am less motherly, less
feminine and less respectable for my occasional dalliance down porn lane. I also
have a friend/editor with shelves and closets full of the stuff, begging to get
it out of his place and into someplace else.
As a result of his generosity, which occurs whenever I find myself in his office
facing the entire closet stacked with porn and him behind me saying "why don't
you take some home. Take it all home," I have become owner and borrower to more
than a few varied adult films. This includes, but is not limited too; vintage
Japanese tentacle Porn, puppet porn, straight porn, gay man on man porn, I may
have even seen some midget porn. In addition, not too long ago a wonderful
someone at TVX sent a box over to the Blue Food office in hopes of having them
reviewed. The three films were Mary!Mary!, Downstairs, Upstairs, and
Irresistible.
I watched Mary! Mary! first one fine afternoon with my man and it nearly sacred
me away from porn for good. There was the sex over dinner where what I think was
a pork chop was rubbed alternately over each participants ass and then sucked on
vigorously. This wasn't made any more appetizing by the orgy scene, where a
giant Jello-O-mold penis was consumed by no less than eight people all of whom
died from an "Ambrosia-like" overdose.
Well, a couple of weeks ago when we had no kids and nothing to do all day long,
we both agreed that this would be a prime time to watch us some porn. We pulled
out the stash and picked a piece with a Asian-American looking actress speaking
in a Canadian-French accent, sporting a Japanese name. This ended up being more
genre mixing than we could handle and we put an end to her pleas to "fuck me in
the ass so good right now."
Feeling brave I picked one of the films that had accompanied Mary!Mary! This one
was called Irresistible. The DVD jacket said the film was about a man traveling
through time to have sex with some of the most infamous women in history. What
the jacket didn't mention became the thing that I fell in love with.
This was porn with a plot. Not just any plot, but a plot I could get behind with
all my heart and wet underpants. It's about a married man with a very rich
fantasy life and a need to be fulfilled sexually. On his routine drive to work,
in the midst of his routine life, he sees a woman at the side of the road and
fantasizes about her all the way to work. This is pretty standard adult film
fare, but what happens next is anything but standard. His office door opens up
to an older gentleman named Miracle Meyer who tells this man that he can fulfill
his wildest fantasies for a mere ten bucks.
The married man calls his wife to find out that his mother-in-law is coming for
dinner and that he has to pick up some fish. He stops off at Meyers and, after
some coaxing, takes a spin in a very patriotic and phallic looking time machine
to have sex with Cleopatra. All goes well until he tells her about the eventual
troubles she'll have with Caesar. Cleo decides to have him put to death. Meyer
brings him back just in the nick of time.
The man heads home to dinner with the wife and mother-in-law telling them both
that he met a man named Meyer whom he might like to fix the mum up with. After a
couple more trips through time, a steamy dream you might see in Roman Polanski's
adult take on The Maltese Falcon, and high jinx involving Shakespeare's Juliet
and a gaggle of strippers in a California motel room, this man goes home to his
wife. It's obvious in the scenes with his wife that he is longing for more than
just amazing sex with infamous women.
Finally he goes back to Meyer for one last trip. He hands the man a piece of
paper with a date and a time. It's his wedding day from years earlier. He
travels back in time to that day and has an amazing experience with the woman he
had chosen all along. When it's time to come back, the time machine returns
empty and the film closes with Meyer and the mother-in-law dancing around a
barren warehouse.
I loved the pacing, it wouldn't let me finish until it was done. I loved this
film because it wasn't just stuffed to over-flowing with porn stars but it had
some real characters in it as well, real characters that I actually liked. For
once I gave a shit about the end and watched it all the way through. I loved it
because it surprised me, by defying what I have always known as porn. It wasn't
just some plot shoved haphazardly in between the standard one oral, one
missionary, one anal and one orgy scene. It was like watching a real late
seventies/early eighties film but with the added bonus of graphic sex. This is
what adult film is and should be in my opinion. Not just porn, not just porn
with a plot, but porn with a brain, a pulse and a conscience.
